Oil Change & Car Maintenance in Lagos
Lagos driving conditions destroy engines faster than anywhere else in the world. Three hours crawling from Lekki to VI. Stop-and-go traffic on Ikorodu Road. Your engine idling while you wait for that stubborn trailer blocking Eko Bridge. Then when traffic finally clears, you’re suddenly doing 100 km/h on the expressway. This constant switching between extreme conditions means your engine oil degrades much faster than manufacturer recommendations assume.
Why Regular Oil Changes Matter More in Lagos
Your Owner’s Manual Wasn’t Written for Lagos Traffic: When Toyota says 10,000 km between oil changes, they’re thinking about smooth American highways and temperate climates. Mercedes recommends 15,000 km intervals for European driving conditions. But Lagos isn’t smooth highways and cool weather.
What Lagos Traffic Does to Your Engine Oil: Oil molecules break down from extreme heat. Extended idling means oil circulates for hours without the cooling effect of airflow. Dust and particulates in Lagos air contaminate oil faster through the air filter. Short trips where engines never reach full operating temperature cause moisture buildup. Stop-and-go driving creates more combustion byproducts that contaminate oil.
The Guardian Maintenance Recommendation: Change your oil every 5,000 kilometers or every 4 months, whichever comes first. This isn’t upselling. This is reality for vehicles operating primarily in Lagos traffic. Your engine will thank you by lasting 200,000 kilometers instead of dying at 120,000.
Comprehensive Oil Change Services
Full Synthetic vs Conventional Oil for Lagos Conditions
Understanding Oil Types and What Your Engine Actually Needs:
Conventional Mineral Oil: The cheapest option, refined from crude petroleum. Adequate for older engines (pre-2005) with simple designs. Breaks down faster in Lagos heat. Suitable if you’re religious about 4-month change intervals and your vehicle has over 200,000 km.
Synthetic Blend (Semi-Synthetic): Mixture of conventional and synthetic oils. Better heat resistance than pure conventional. Good middle-ground for vehicles from 2005-2015. Handles Lagos conditions better while costing less than full synthetic. Our most popular option for Toyota, Honda, and Nissan models.
Full Synthetic Oil: Engineered molecules designed for extreme conditions. Best heat resistance and longest life. Required for most European vehicles (Mercedes, Range Rover, BMW). Recommended for any turbocharged engine. Worth the extra cost for newer vehicles you plan to keep long-term.
Manufacturer-Specific Formulations: Mercedes requires MB 229.5 specification. BMW specifies LL-01 or LL-04. Toyota recommends different specs for regular vs hybrid engines. We stock oils meeting proper specifications, not generic bottles claiming to work for everything.
Our Oil Selection Process: We don’t ask “what oil do you want?” We look up your vehicle’s engine type, check manufacturer specifications, consider your driving patterns, and recommend the optimal oil for your situation. Then we explain why.
Why Choose Guardian for Maintenance Services
Experience with Your Specific Vehicle Brand
We’re Not Generic Mechanics: Our 40 years maintaining European and Japanese vehicles means we understand the specific maintenance needs of each brand. Mercedes need different care than Toyotas. Honda maintenance schedules differ from Nissan.
Brand-Specific Knowledge:
- Toyota timing chain tensioner issues in certain engine families
- Honda valve adjustment requirements unique to their engines
- Mercedes-Benz extended service intervals and what they actually mean
- Range Rover air suspension maintenance requirements
- Nissan CVT transmission fluid requirements.
Quality Parts and Fluids
We Don’t Use Cheap Consumables: The oil, filters, and fluids we use directly affect how long your engine lasts. We stock quality products:
- Mobil, Castrol, Shell, Total engine oils meeting proper specifications
- OEM or equivalent quality filters (Denso, Bosch, Mann)
- Genuine or OE-specification coolants and brake fluids
- Quality batteries with proper warranties
Why Cheap Parts Cost More: A ₦3,000 filter that fails after 3 months versus a ₦5,000 filter lasting 6 months. Cheap oil that breaks down in Lagos heat. Generic coolant that corrodes your aluminum engine. We’ve seen the failures. We use quality.
Transparent Maintenance Scheduling
We Don’t Oversell Services: Some workshops recommend unnecessary services to increase bills. We maintain your vehicle according to manufacturer specifications and actual condition, not imaginary schedules.
When We Do Recommend Additional Services: It’s based on visual inspection showing actual wear or problems. We show you the worn brake pads, the cracked belt, the leaking hose. You decide whether to fix now or monitor, based on real information.

Additional Fluid Services
Transmission Fluid Service: Automatic transmissions in Lagos stop-and-go traffic work harder than anywhere else. Transmission fluid should be changed every 40,000-60,000 km depending on vehicle type. We offer transmission drain and fill or complete flush depending on what your transmission requires.
Coolant System Flush: Lagos heat stresses cooling systems constantly. Old coolant loses its protective properties and causes corrosion. We recommend coolant flushes every 40,000 km or 2 years. This includes: complete system drain, flush with cleaning solution to remove rust and deposits, refill with proper coolant type (different vehicles require different formulations), pressure test to check for leaks.
Brake Fluid Replacement: Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, reducing braking effectiveness and causing internal corrosion. Should be changed every 2-3 years regardless of mileage. Critical safety service often neglected.
Power Steering Fluid Service: Power steering systems develop leaks and the fluid gets contaminated. Changing power steering fluid prevents expensive pump and rack failures. Especially important for older vehicles.
Differential Oil Service: If you drive a rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle, your differential needs oil changes too. Often neglected because people don’t know it exists. We check and service it according to manufacturer recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oil Changes and Maintenance
How often should I really change my oil in Lagos? Every 5,000 km or 4 months, whichever comes first. This is more frequent than your owner’s manual probably says, but owner’s manuals aren’t written for Lagos traffic conditions. Extended idling, dust, and heat degrade oil faster here.
Can I use cheaper oil to save money? You can, but you’ll spend more in the long run. Cheap oil breaks down faster, requiring more frequent changes. It also provides less protection, leading to increased engine wear and expensive repairs later. Use proper quality oil at correct intervals and your engine will last twice as long.
My car takes 5W-30 but the mechanic put 10W-40. Is this okay? No. Use exactly what the manufacturer specifies. Oil viscosity affects engine operation, fuel efficiency, and wear patterns. Using wrong viscosity can cause problems ranging from poor fuel economy to increased wear. We always use manufacturer-specified viscosity.
Do I need to change my oil if I barely drive my car? Yes, based on time interval even if mileage is low. Oil degrades from moisture accumulation and chemical changes even while sitting. If you drive less than 5,000 km in 4 months, change oil every 4 months anyway.
Can you do oil changes while I wait? Yes. Express oil change service typically takes 45-60 minutes. We recommend calling ahead so we can allocate a bay. Walk-ins during busy periods might wait longer.
What’s included in your multi-point inspection during oil changes? We check: tire condition and pressure, brake pad thickness, battery condition, all fluid levels, belts and hoses, lights and wipers, suspension components, underneath vehicle for leaks or damage. Anything concerning is reported to you with photos if needed.
My transmission is shifting roughly. Can this be fixed with fluid change? Maybe. If the transmission fluid is old and contaminated, fresh fluid can improve shifting. However, if there’s internal damage, fluid change won’t fix it. We can inspect your transmission, test the fluid condition, and advise whether fluid service will help or if you need transmission work.
How do I know when my spark plugs need changing? Most vehicles need spark plug replacement every 40,000-60,000 km (standard plugs) or 80,000-100,000 km (iridium/platinum plugs). Signs of failing spark plugs: rough idle, misfiring, reduced fuel efficiency, difficulty starting. We inspect plugs during major services.
Is it okay to mix different brands of oil? In emergencies when you need to add oil between changes, mixing brands of the same weight/specification is okay. However, don’t mix synthetic and conventional oil types. And at your next oil change, do complete drain and refill with one quality oil type.
